BEING ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY AS A RESTAURANT

AT MAKARS THERE IS NO GREEN WASHING, WE DO WHAT WE CAN TO REDUCE OUR IMPACT AND WE WON’T LIE ABOUT IT OR MISLEAD YOU

OUR ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT

I consider myself to be a realistic environmentalist. It is impossible for a business not to have an environmental impact; we need good jobs that pay taxes and be honest about this. Rather than mislead customers that we are “sustainable”, these are the things we do to reduce our impact:

  1. Except for cardboard, metals & glass, our non-compostable waste is incinerated for energy. Plastic recycling is a myth. Most of plastic sent for recycling gets shipped abroad & ends dumped in the sea.
  2. Our food waste is anaerobic digested to produce biogas, used to generate electricity. The remaining material is fertilizer.
  3. Our menu offers real meat alternatives with unique home grown mushrooms & house veggie haggis. There are no Frankenstein “Beyond” meat alternatives on our menu!.
  4. We regularly ask our butchers who is raising our meats, & where was the animal was slaughtered.
  5. CO2 for our sodas & beers is from reclaimed CO2 from Stewarts Brewing. By capturing a natural by-product of the brewing process saves tons of methane gas.
  6. Our electricity tariff is from 100% renewable from sources.
  7. Finally, I make sure all staff are paid more than the living wage, paid on time, treated fairly & encouraged to develop their career @ Makars.

Yours
